David's New Toy

David discovered the longboard at university this year. Some of his friends had them, which gave him the opportunity to learn to ride. Without a helmet. (*sigh*)
With the little bit of money he had left at the end of the school year, David decided to purchase a longboard for himself. After researching online, he found exactly what he wanted. He ordered it, and followed its journey, online, from the factory to our home (via FedEx). Hourly. I received regular updates on its progress.

I was working at home yesterday, with many interruptions, due to the failure of the pump on our four-party well. We share this well with our neighbors. When it fails to function, we have no water for drinking, washing dishes, bathing, toilets, etc. When it fails, it is up to our group of neighbors to work out a solution. One neighbor has the longest experience with this well, so he took charge. An electrician was called, but it wasn't his type of problem. A well-drilling and maintenance company was called, and they told us that we needed a new pump. Fortunately, the co$$$$t will be split among the group of neighbors.

David's longboard arrived yesterday at dinnertime, so after the well pump was replaced, we took showers and ate dinner. Then David, Gregg and I set out for one of our favorite parts of the island to take a walk and ride the new board.
Isn't that color combination glorious?
I think spring is finally here.
I could live on this road, if the right place was available. It's charming.
Of course, Gregg had to have a turn!
It was a beautiful evening. I love having our son at home with us again, even if that board makes me a little bit nervous!

Oh my hell! Just reading about David riding that thing gave me palpitations. Then, seeing the pictures made it even more nerve-racking. But THEN, seeing GREGG on that thing literally made me gasp!! I'm such a chicken when it comes to that kind of stuff. The one thing that I remember most from my visits to Seattle is how hilly it is. I suppose it would be fun for someone who wants to ride a slab of wood with tiny little wheels on it, but those of us watching, not so much! ;-)

Haha! David bursts through the door with freshman year behind him, and some whole new ways to torment his mother. Love it! Should be an exciting summer. Tell Gregg to stay off that thing. It is reserved for the young and stupid! hah!

Well. I'm not going to tell you our neighborhood story about the boy riding the longboard down a hill WITHOUT a helmet who crashed and had a very serious head injury -- part of his skull removed and placed in his stomach until the swelling went down -- two weeks in a coma and half a year recovery -- well, I'm not going to tell it, but maybe David needs to hear it from ME! The boy is fine, now, thank God, but it was hideously scary.

On a lighter note, I love the chartreuse/green and purple flowers and colors -- beautiful.

Tell David that if he doesn't wear a helmet he is going to hear from me. And my boyfriend should do the same even for a short time. You are not alone being nervous, believe me. As Barry said, they both should wear helmets as breaking a leg is one thing but the rest of the fragile parts are always a problem. Poor David, not only he has you to spoil his fun but I am right behind.

However because we very wise we will nag him until he gets his helmet. Hugs from here to all of you. Even the helmet-less ones :)

Thank you for your concern. I hate to tell you, but there is a story from our area that is like yours, Elizabeth, and it didn't end as well. I am well aware of the risks. I will keep mentioning the helmet, but he is 18 now. You all know how well they listen at that age!

You live in such a beautiful place Karen -- my whole body relaxes whenever I look at your pictures. I read The Water Giver (Joan Ryan) a year or so ago and am terrified of skateboards now. Abe was into skateboarding as a 5-6 year old and now Ruby takes it out back and tries to ride. They're young enough I can force the helmet..

I am so glad your pump was fixed. We live with the same situation..but we don't share our well. OY. And not that we are selfish....
So glad David is home too. He looks so healthy and happy!!! I have seen the longboards too, but I don't know what makes them better/different than a regular skateboard.
Love your spring colors too!!!

Those flowers are beautiful Karen!
Tell David that there are some pretty cool helmets available now. Having had a severe concussion with NO helmet while skating two years ago, I have learned my lesson. Pull some parental 'authority' here for his sake. But I know 'kids'.....
Nice to touch base again.....been busy with my Dad.

Love his new board. Of all the things he could come home from college with, I think he did pretty good. Although I would recommend a helmet. But that might negate "the cool". : ) Wow, your water problems make me pretty thankful for municipal water at the ready. Those are beautiful pictures...love the one with the mailbox. It looks like a postcard! : )

How wonderful that David is home! One year of college behind him - WOW, where did the year go? And the longboard and lack of helmet? I cringe at some of the "fun" things my kids did! UGH!!

Again, your photos make me want to jump on a plane and abandon Chicago for a while, especially with the crazy weather of late.

I just returned from your recommended visit to Rebecca's place - stunning. Thank you for thinking of Erin...
hugs to you

So fun, my niece in Hawaii "tarp surfs" on her long board. Tell Gregg to be careful. My husband had shoulder surgery as a result of thinking he could just "pick-up" skateboarding for a bit. Yay - for summer and the kids coming home.
