For a Mermaid

I don't want to spoil a surprise, but I just sent a package to Elizabeth for her beautiful daughter, Sophie, and I have to show you what's in it. Sophie and Katie share the same birthday, the same year, so I feel a special connection with her. She loves the beach and the sea, and the mermaid is one of the constant pictures on her mom's wonderful blog, a moon, worn as if it had been a shell.

Sophie has epilepsy, and when I saw the photos of her lovely room on Elizabeth's posting about Sophie's birthday, I thought a quilt would be a cozy thing to send to her. So I made a mermaid-themed quilt for Sophie, and it is on its way to her.
Normally, my quilts (made for patients at the hospital) have only one piece of fabric on each side. I am not an experienced quilter AT ALL. But I tried to make this one especially interesting for Sophie, so it has some different fabrics on the top side. It has two panels of this mermaid fabric:
and two sections of fabric that look like clouds and the sea,
surrounding a blue and white mermaid panel:
the back is flannel:
and both sides look like this (one folded over the other).
The binding is rainbow satin that matches both sides.
It was a joy to create, and though there are imperfections in it, love is the main ingredient.
I hope Sophie will enjoy and find comfort in it!

How in the world should I respond to this gift, not to mention this blog post????

I'm taking a deep breath and squeezing my eyes against tears, Karen. Sophie will hold this quilt and I just know her astral twin will be smiling at her. That's what I'm thinking.

Thank you, Karen -- I can't wait to see it; I can't wait to give it to Sophie; I can't wait to imagine the two girls connected some way in this strange and wondrous world.

Elizabeth, it was a privilege and a pleasure to make this. It makes me happy to think of Sophie wrapped in soft warmth, love and coziness, with Katie's inspiration as part of that.

ChiTown, Ellen, Jason, 8741, Anonymous: thank you for your sweet words!
