Sophie has epilepsy, and when I saw the photos of her lovely room on Elizabeth's posting about Sophie's birthday, I thought a quilt would be a cozy thing to send to her. So I made a mermaid-themed quilt for Sophie, and it is on its way to her.
Normally, my quilts (made for patients at the hospital) have only one piece of fabric on each side. I am not an experienced quilter AT ALL. But I tried to make this one especially interesting for Sophie, so it has some different fabrics on the top side. It has two panels of this mermaid fabric:
and two sections of fabric that look like clouds and the sea,
surrounding a blue and white mermaid panel:
the back is flannel:
and both sides look like this (one folded over the other).
The binding is rainbow satin that matches both sides.
It was a joy to create, and though there are imperfections in it, love is the main ingredient.
I hope Sophie will enjoy and find comfort in it!

How in the world should I respond to this gift, not to mention this blog post????
I'm taking a deep breath and squeezing my eyes against tears, Karen. Sophie will hold this quilt and I just know her astral twin will be smiling at her. That's what I'm thinking.
Thank you, Karen -- I can't wait to see it; I can't wait to give it to Sophie; I can't wait to imagine the two girls connected some way in this strange and wondrous world.
Elizabeth, it was a privilege and a pleasure to make this. It makes me happy to think of Sophie wrapped in soft warmth, love and coziness, with Katie's inspiration as part of that.
