St. Baldrick's, ChiTown Girl & Stud Muffin

For those of you who know ChiTown Girl, she has just posted on her blog about her son's participation in the St. Baldrick's fundraiser this year. "Stud Muffin" is a teenager, with a gorgeous mop of brown hair, and he is going to SHAVE IT OFF in Katie's honor, to raise funds for childhood cancer research! What a guy! (And they never met each other; this is just one of the great things about blogging.)

Stud Muffin has already reached his original fundraising goal, so he has doubled the goal (that's the spirit!); he could use some support for this part of it. If you would like to donate or learn more, click on the link to ChiTown Girl's site, St. Baldrick's site, or here to view Stud Muffin's page.

Thank you, Stud Muffin & ChiTown Girl! Katie would be thrilled that such a "stud muffin" is doing this for her, and for cancer research.

That's great!! My french teacher actually did this last year, it was great (although we all agreed that he should have shaved off his mustache too...haha)

I made a small donation in Katie's honor :)

This is one of my favorite pictures of Katie. Faded jeans, hip sweater, tan hands, sparkly nail polish..total teenager vibe in this one. Just gorgeous.

Karen, hi again. I've given the quilt recipe to my mother-in-law who was going through and purging fabric. Well, I think I may have pulled the proverbial finger out of the dyke! You're going to have some really nice blankets coming your way! She's a quilter and now she's telling her quilter friends who are making some too! And let me tell you these ladies can sew! Anyway I'm wondering if you can e-mail me and we can converse about some specifics. :-)

I had lunch with your sister-in-law at Vinland yesterday and she said she'd be happy to deliver to you when I have some finished products.

WOW! Karen you've gone above and beyond. Thanks so much for adding this info to Katie's site. Lex really appreciates all the love and support you're sending his way. Thank you, thank you, thank you!!

Cathy, that is wonderful news! I've been HOPING to connect with some quilters/sewing groups just like your mother-in-law! THANK YOU, and please THANK HER for me!
I've emailed Cheri to ask her to give you my phone #. My email is listed at www.caringbridge.org/visit/katiegerstenberger. Do you want to email yours to me? Whatever works for you & your mother-in-law, I will help you all that I can. The hospital really needs quilts & homemade blankets. You just made my day!

Smiley & Irene, I love this photo, too. She and David were with me, taking the kittens to the vet for a check up, that day. She always got super-tan, since she had dark skin like her dad's. It's hard to believe she was just 11 and a half there. Such a lovely girl.

ChiTown, it's my pleasure. I loved getting his letter, and didn't know about all of the family connections. That makes it more meaningful for him, I'm sure. Let's WIPE OUT this horrible disease!

oh my gosh, Karen. This is my absolute fav. picture you've posted yet of katie!

I love it.

She looks like the all-american girl. Wow. What a beautiful girl she was. The sweater just brings out her hair and eyes.

Thanks for posting it.

I enjoyed it and prayed for God to fill the lonliness left by her absence.

I'ts so awesome what this person did in honor of her!

We know a dad that had his head shaved for his little daughter. Seeing his bald head made me smile and made me sad all at the same time.

What a touching tribute that 'Stud Muffin' will shave his head in Katie's memory. I looove the pic of her in this post. So spunky and happy. Every time I see her picture looking so full of life, I can't even imagine your loss.

Couldn't resist the fact that stud muffin would shave off that gorgeous hair so I threw a few pennies in the pot on behalf of Katie, and my friends' daughter Jadyn Fred who was treated at Seattle Children's Hospital. I do love to read your blog. Thankyou!

I passed the St. Baldrick website to Ali so she can suggest it to her buddies...

SO GREAT to see you today; you are ON FIRE, lady! I hope you can find someone willing to play with all that fabric, and thanks for not talking about the -----nose on your site (I for one would be grossed out!)

Thanks also for your previous post. I hadn't put it together that that was Ash Wednesday. Ouch.

That's one of my favorite chariites. I donate every year through the Los Angeles Fire Depts. event, but I'm heading over to make a donation to honor Katie. She must be so proud of being honored in such fashion.

We have so many memories of that marvelous young woman. One experience is especially vivid. I used to take our children around Bainbridge Island every year in our 12 foot outboard boat. we would stop and look at the sea floor and have a picnic. One sunny day I called Karen and asked if she would let us take the kids on a boat trip to our house about 2 miles away by water. She thought they would have fun, so off we went to pick them up. We arrived in front of their house and Karen helped steady the boat as the kids, David and Kathryn got in the boat. Karen and I were misty eyed as they boarded...deja vu.
We proceeded up the pass with the kids facing the back of the boat. It had gotten a more bumpy, with the wind kicking up a bit more and salt water spray annointing us.
Kathryn said to me "Can we turn around?" I replied, "do you want to go back home?" NO, NO, NO she said , I want to turn around and face the wind and waves!" Typical fearless Kathryn.

A bright cold day and the kids loved sitting in the sun and smiling. I thought of my Catherine sitting with the memory of our sweet Katie. We left the flowers (Catherine said they had to be pink)and Joseph was concerned we would get into trouble for leaving things at the park. Michael just smiled and jumped off the bench 16,000 times. Thanks for letting us be a part of Katie's birthday. Joe, Hollie, Joseph and Michael
