Happy Birthday and Julie & Julia

We had my in-laws over for dinner on Saturday night. My mother-in-law just turned 89 (father-in-law achieved this milestone last August, when we were in Canada). Happily, my sister-in-law Linda (treasurer of Katie's Comforters Guild) and her husband Bill joined us, so we had a nice little party of six.
The night before this, on Friday, I went to a "Julie & Julia" dinner party - a tribute to Julia Child and her impact in bringing French cuisine to America - ladies only. You may recall that I hosted last year's event; this year, it was at the home of our friend, Julie.
Heidi & Julie
I have to say, there is nothing like a wonderful group of women, gathered together in the spirit of fun, fellowship and food.

When I saw the beautiful table that Julie had set for us, I thought, "Only a group of women would do this for each other." I just don't see guys appreciating all of this.

Men out there - am I wrong? Please tell me if I am, and I will retract that!
Our hostess, Julie, with Cami, Suzanne, Heidi, Denise, Kay, Pam, Heather & me
I made Brie en Croute, accompanied by pears, apples and crackers (both sweet and savory). We also had onion & anchovy tarts, cheese tarts, onion soup, salade Nicoise, beef tenderloin with mushrooms, roasted acorn squash, sorbet bombe and chocolate tart - and lots and lots of wine: champagne, sparkling, white, blush, red & dessert. There was MUCH laughter and loud talking. It got progressively louder and more raucous as the evening and festivities went on.
Unflattering, but the camera doesn't lie...
We planned ahead and had designated drivers; everyone got home safely.
Thank you, Julie (& Julia, for inspiring us)!

Men gather in front of the TV, and stuff their faces with mass quantities of beer, salsa and nachos. They yell about the referee's calls, belch, swear and have a marvelous time... or they go to the golf course.

Women feast on mouth-watering cuisine the likes of which you've described We laugh, we cry and we light candles to set the tone in our gathering spaces. We are often animated in our descriptions, using our hands and facial expressions to make our feelings clear (as you demonstrate so well) and we, too, have a marvelous time!

Cheers!

Suz, I realized that I never answered you about that tapestry on LAST year's posting! A little s.l.o.w here...it belonged to my great-grandparents, and it used to hang in the stairwell in their home in San Francisco (we have photos). Then, my grandparents had it in their home in Seattle. Now, it lives here, with us. Thanks for asking!

That girl party looks like so much fun. I adore my girlfriends -- honestly don't know what I'd do without them.

Thanks for sharing your lovely dinner with us -- it sounded delicious, too!

I am trying to get the green off my head, envy is not a good color for me but how I wish we could have a girls night with all my peeps. You would love my girls as I am sure I would love yours. The food sounds just gorgeous. I am so glad you had a good time.

Looks like a very fun evening...and looks like you were having a ball. I love seeing you enjoying yourself. Love the table settings etc. No, guys don't appreciate this sort of thing. At all. So I love it when some girls can get together around a pretty table and be entirely too loud. : )

My kind of table, my kind of menu, my kind of party! Loved seeing you in full story-telling mode. Hilarious! What a delightful evening, and women certainly have it all over the men!
