Hannah's Hopeful Hearts

I just received this message from our friends, Reba & Bill:
On March 19th, 2010, the Bainbridge community came together at Grace Church for the Hannah's Hopeful Hearts "Climbing Mountains for A Cure for Brain Tumors" fundraiser.  The event was an enormous success both in terms of the love that was poured out for Hannah and our family and for the funds raised for brain tumor research.  The funds were critical for the development of Tumor Paint in Dr. Jim Olson’s lab.  We are delighted to share that the US FDA just gave the green light to begin brain tumor trials in the US with BLZ-100, the first tumor paint product.
In addition to Tumor Paint, innovative research under the name of Project Violet was developed by Jim and his colleagues at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center.  Project Violet aspires to develop a new class of nature-derived anti-cancer compounds that attack cancer cells while leaving healthy cells untouched.  This project largely depends on public donations – often from parents and friends of Olson’s pediatric patients - to fund the development of drugs to treat cancer or other diseases once thought incurable.
Another pediatric cancer researcher, Dr. Michael Jensen, heads up the Ben Towne Center for Childhood Cancer Research.  Affiliated with Seattle Children’s Hospital, the Ben Towne Center has in a few short years achieved great success with their immunotherapy research.  Currently, 13 children and counting are leukemia-free, the relapsed neuroblastoma trial is beginning, and there is hopeful progress in targeting brain tumors. Additionally, Grace Church sponsored a young team of cyclists last year in the Race Across America (RAAM), benefiting Mike Jensen’s research.  Two of these cyclists were classmates of our daughter, Hannah.  We have been proud to support both Jim and Mike’s work.
We are excited to announce that for the first time ever, Dr. Olson and Dr. Jensen graciously agreed to come together in one special night to update our community on their work and progress in childhood cancer research.
This new Hannah’s Hopeful Hearts event will take place on Friday, April, 10th, 2015, beginning at 7 pm at Grace Church on Bainbridge Island.  Following presentations from Dr. Olson and Dr. Jensen, a call for donations will take place.  During the night, wine, light hors d’oeuvres and a simple dessert buffet will be provided.  The evening will conclude with a lively concert by the band, St. Paul de Vence.  Friends with Jim, this band contributed to the Violet Sessions CD, a creative project that helps to fund research at the Olson lab.
We look forward to another heartfelt and inspirational evening to further the work of these two amazing doctors towards their mutual goals of finding less toxic, more effective treatments for pediatric cancer.  And in the words of our favorite QB who is #strongagainstcancer, Go Jim!!  Go Mike!!  Go Hawks!!

With gratitude and hope,
Reba Ferguson and Bill Hunt
Gregg and I will be participating in this event, and we invite you to mark your calendars and join us. It's going to be a stellar evening, filled with good news, hope, thanksgiving and joy.

Online Fundraiser for Katie's Comforters Guild

Recently, I received a lovely note from a kind-hearted woman who wants to support our guild. Her name is Michelle, and she is a Pampered Chef consultant. Michelle offered to hold an online fundraiser for our guild, so that everyone can shop from the comfort of their own home, buy items they like and support our guild in doing so - that's a win-win-win situation! Here is the information:

Fundraiser for Katie’s Comforters Guildat Seattle Childrens Hospital

(the specific page for this fundraiser on Michelle's site is under "my calendar" - or click here.)
Please take a moment to check out the Pampered Chef online catalog link above, and support a great cause! The inspiration for Katie's Comforters Guild is Katie Gerstenberger, who was a patient at Seattle Children's Hospital. Her blanket from home, made for her by her mother, was a HUGE comfort to her during her treatment for cancer. Our goal is to bring that same comfort to all of the kids in the hospital. Volunteers make quilts and blankets for children at Seattle Children's, and funds raised through this sale will support that mission, and purchase supplies for the handmade quilts. For more information, please visit:

We'll raise funds three ways:
1. Donation of up to 15% of the fundraiser's total sales
2. $3 contribution for each Show booked from my fundraiser
3. Our Independent Consultant Michelle Farris will also donate her full commission of15% of total
fundraiser sales, so 25-30% of your purchase price will go to support Katie's Comforters Guild.
The more we fundraise, the higher percentage the Guild earns!
Please visit the link above and place an order through our fundraiser. Order high-quality products for your kitchen and for entertaining, while supporting our Guild. The fundraiser runs through June 20, so please make sure to place your order before that date. If you purchase more than $60.00, you will receive a free vegetable peeler- choose between serrated, julienne, traditional or avocado.
Please feel free to forward this information, and ask a friend or two to join us! Join in the fun - from the comfort of your own home!

Special thanks to Michelle Farris for this wonderful idea - please visit her page (see the link above) and contact her with any questions you may have!

Panda and the True Value of Camp

You might have noticed a new blog on my sidebar, called Kathryn Panda Bradley. It is a blog about someone I met at Camp Goodtimes West. Everyone on staff has a Camp Name, and that is how they are known by all of the campers and other staff. Panda is the Camp Goodtimes name of Kathryn Bradley.
Photo of Panda by Paul Dudley Photography
She had cancer when she was young, so she first attended Camp Goodtimes as a camper when she was a child. Later, she became a staff member, along with her brother, who is known to all as Loop.
I don't know either Panda or Loop very closely, but I know them from the various times I've volunteered at camp or on Da Boata (by the way, my Camp name is Truffle). Both of them are warm, friendly, humorous, open, kind and likely to be dressed very crazily, as is normal for camp. I recall a brief but meaningful conversation I had with Panda one day last summer.

Panda had a recurrence of cancer, and she has been in treatment. Recently, she moved home on hospice care. My heart has been with her family, as we have walked the hospice path with our own daughter. I just received word that Panda passed away this morning.

Why am I telling you this? Because it made me realize anew that the impact of Camp Goodtimes goes beyond what I understood when our children attended in the summer of 2007. It is much more than a week of fun and craziness which helps children who have cancer (and their siblings) realize what cancer cannot take from them...it goes far beyond that. Camp creates an extended family of people who really and truly care about each camper and staff member, forever. Not just for fun, but in sickness and in health, in remission and in relapse, until death and afterward. I know this, because I have felt this love and caring directed toward our family when Katie died, and I have seen it come alongside other children and their families when they are dying. It's not just about the Goodtimes - though there are plenty of those. It's about caring for people who touch your life briefly, yet touch your heart for all time.
Katie and friends at Camp Goodtimes, 2007

It may be part of the reason why Katie asked us to scatter her ashes there.
To Panda and her family, to Codi and her family, to Gloria and her family, to every Camp Goodtimes camper, staffer and his/her family: you will always be loved and remembered by your Camp Goodtimes family. I am so thankful that we joined that family in June of 2007! Though it means suffering grief alongside other families (like ours) when a staffer or camper passes away, it also means that no one has to suffer alone...and that is worth it. It is also a reason for gratitude, and a good reason to support this camp.
Katie at Camp Goodtimes, 2007
Whether you are a fan of the American Cancer Society or not, giving directly to Camp Goodtimes is more than a good investment; it is a gift that lasts forever in the hearts of children and their families. It creates community, and opportunity for love and happiness when people need it the most. Please consider supporting Camp Goodtimes West - visit this website to find out how you can do it.

And to Panda, Loop and family:  I send love and prayers for comfort in your hearts.
